Shirley Jerome
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley A. Jerome (Harper), a cherished member of the Dover community, on December 7, 2024. Born in 1939 in Long Branch, New Jersey, Shirley moved to Dover at the age of five, where she attended Dover Public Schools and graduated from Dover High School in 1957. Shirley remained a dedicated and integral part of the Dover community throughout her life.
Shirley devoted an incredible 51 years to the Dover Board of Education, retiring in 2015. Her distinguished career included roles as a Classroom Teacher, Basic Skills Math Instructor, and District Test Coordinator for grades 1-8. Shirley spent the majority of her career at Academy Street School, where she inspired countless students and colleagues with her dedication, patience, and unwavering commitment to education. Her influence extended far beyond the classroom, shaping the lives of generations in Dover.
As a lifelong advocate for education and the Dover community, Shirley remained connected through her memberships in the New Jersey Retired Education Association and the Morris County Education Association. Her legacy as an educator, mentor, and friend will forever be a part of Dover Public Schools.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Samuel M. Jerome; her parents, Anna Marie and William M. Harper; and her sister, Mildred Claudeen Orlandi. She is survived by her sons, Sam M. Jerome and Steve M. Jerome; her sister, Mary J. Rodriguez; stepdaughter, Marlene Halcott; several nieces and nephews; and many caring friends who knew her as a pillar of the Dover community.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, December 12, 2024, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Tuttle Funeral Home in Randolph (Tuttlefh.com). A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, December 13, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by interment at Restland Memorial Park, East Hanover.
Dover Public Schools extends its heartfelt condolences to Shirley’s family, friends, and former colleagues. Her dedication to the students and families of Dover has left an indelible mark, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Lydia Orleans
Lydia Orleans, a cherished member of the Academy Street Elementary School community, passed away yesterday. Lydia worked as a paraprofessional at the school for several years, where she was known for her boundless kindness, gentle spirit, and unwavering dedication to the students and staff.
Lydia's presence at Academy Street Elementary was marked by her warm smile and her willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. She had a unique ability to connect with students, offering them not just academic support but also a sense of comfort and encouragement. Her colleagues admired her for her patience, compassion, and the genuine care she showed for everyone around her.
Beyond her work at the school, Lydia was an active member of the community. She was always involved in local events and initiatives, bringing people together with her infectious positivity and strong sense of community spirit. Lydia believed in the power of small acts of kindness, and her generosity touched the lives of many.
Lydia’s legacy of kindness and community involvement will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her absence will be deeply felt at Academy Street Elementary, where she made a lasting impact on the hearts of students, staff, and the broader community.

Edward Michael James Nazzaro
Fondly known as Ed, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2024, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with his devoted husband, Michael John Gary, by his side. Born on March 30, 1951, in Dover, NJ, to Joseph Salvatore Nazzaro and Clementine DeLorenzo Nazzaro, Ed discovered his passion for teaching early in life.
Ed’s distinguished teaching career began in New Jersey at Randolph High School. In 1977, he returned to Dover High School as Supervisor of World Languages, ESL, and Bilingual Education, a role he held for 23 years. He later served as Vice Principal at both North Dover and Academy Street elementary schools and retired from the language faculty at Randolph High School. Concurrently, Ed became an adjunct professor of Spanish and ESL at the County College of Morris.
Ed's contributions to education were recognized through numerous awards, including Morris County’s Best Teacher Award and Outstanding Educator of the Year by CHISPAC (Hispanic Political Action Committee). Ed founded and ran Dover High School’s annual International Festival, the International Club, and the Latin Mix Dance Group.
Faith and family were the cornerstone of Ed's life. He is survived by his beloved husband, Michael John Gary; his cherished dogs, Bosco and Bella; his brother Joseph and sister-in-law Sharon Nazzaro of Randolph, NJ; his sister Anita Fehsal of Succasunna, NJ; nieces, nephews, and a large extended family.
A Celebration of Ed’s Life will be held on September 8, 2024, at 2 pm, at the Tuttle Funeral Home in Randolph, NJ. A private family burial will follow.
Donations may be made in Ed’s memory to the Dover College Promise Program.
Joan Davidson
Joan M. Davidson, a dedicated Dover Public Schools educator, passed away on August 10, 2024, at the age of 87. A lifelong resident of Dover, NJ, Joan spent over 30 years teaching English at Dover High School, where she was admired for her commitment to students and her passion for literature.
Joan was deeply involved in the Dover community, serving as a volunteer at the Dover Area Historical Society and as an active member of St. Mary’s Church, where she participated in the choir and various committees. Her contributions extended beyond the classroom, impacting the lives of many in her hometown.
She is survived by her daughters, Margaret Davidson-Morris and Karen Davidson-Smith, along with five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Joan was predeceased by her husband, Richard Davidson, and her son, Robert Davidson.

Luna Castro
Dover High School community deeply mourns the loss of Luna Cabrera Castro, a remarkable member of our senior class. Throughout her time at NDE, EDE, DMS, and DHS, Luna's resilience and spirit in facing significant health challenges were truly inspirational.
Luna's positive energy and courage deeply impacted her peers and educators. She will be remembered for her bright presence and the strength she displayed, leaving a lasting imprint on our hearts.
We extend our heartfelt sympathies to Luna's family and friends. Her legacy of bravery and kindness will continue to inspire us. Luna will be greatly missed but forever cherished in our memories.
Valentina Lopez Healy
Dover commemorates the life of Valentina "Val" Lopez Healey, who passed away on November 25, 2023. A Dover resident from age six, Valentina was a beloved educator, having taught for 29 years in the local school system, and a pioneer in bilingual education. She also played a vital role at Sacred Heart School, notably in establishing its library.
Valentina's contributions extended beyond education; she served in various community roles, including volunteering at Dover General Hospital and being an active member of local clubs. Her love for travel and her family shone brightly throughout her life.
As we remember Valentina, Dover honors her dedication to education and community service. Contributions in her memory to Sacred Heart Church in Dover, NJ, or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital are welcomed. Her legacy in Dover, marked by her passion for teaching and community involvement, will be treasured
Diane Egli
Dover pays tribute to Diane G. Egli, a dedicated educator who passed away on November 20, 2023. Born in Dover, Diane was an integral part of our educational community, dedicating 27 years of service to East Dover Elementary School, where she made a lasting impact as the principal's secretary.
Diane's commitment to education and her role in shaping the learning environment at East Dover Elementary will be long remembered. Her passion for travel and love for animals spoke volumes about her vibrant spirit and the joy she found in life's adventures.
As we bid farewell to Diane, Dover honors her legacy of service and the positive influence she had on our community. In her memory, contributions to Eleventh Hour Rescue in Randolph reflect her love for animals. Diane's dedication to the Dover community and her heartfelt work in education will be deeply cherished and remembered.
Charlene Shunk

Betty MacNaughten
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the community in remembrance of Betty MacNaughten, “Nee Doggett,” who passed away at the age of 93. A lifelong Dover resident, Betty dedicated her life to education and community service.
Active in the First Memorial Presbyterian Church and a vital part of the Dover Public Schools, Betty was instrumental in establishing the East Dover Elementary School Library, where she served as a Library Aide for over thirty years.
Betty's unwavering commitment to our community and passion for education leaves a lasting legacy. She will be deeply missed, yet her contributions to Dover will continue to be felt by generations to come.
William "Bill" Douglas
Dover celebrates the life of William "Bill" Douglas, who dedicated 34 years to nurturing minds at our elementary schools. A pillar of education in Dover, Bill's devotion to teaching and his heartfelt engagement with students have crafted a legacy that stands the test of time. Beyond the classroom, he was a companion and advocate for veterans, sharing in their fellowship with pride and respect. Bill's kind heart and jovial nature endeared him to many, establishing him as a foundational figure in our community. His contributions to Dover's educational fabric and his warm, friendly presence are treasured memories that will endure.
Noel Leon (Eddie Figueroa)
The Dover community mourns the loss of Noel Leon, born Eddie Figueroa, a proud Dover High School alum and a beloved entertainer who left an unforgettable mark on the LGBTQ+ community. From the stages of South Beach to the hearts of those who knew her, Noel’s vibrant energy, charisma, and artistic brilliance shone brightly.
A trailblazer in the drag world, Noel was celebrated for her electrifying performances, boundless creativity, and deep love for Latin culture. Her influence extended beyond the stage—she was a mentor, a friend, and a beacon of confidence and self-expression.
As we remember Noel, we honor her legacy of passion, resilience, and authenticity. The Dover community extends its deepest condolences to her family, friends, and all who were touched by her presence. Though gone too soon, Noel’s light will continue to shine in the memories and hearts of those she inspired.
Stanley L. Schoonmaker
We are saddened to share the passing of Stanley L. Schoonmaker, 94, lifetime resident of Dover, New Jersey, passed away on July 4, 2025.
Born on January 24, 1931, in Passaic, New Jersey, Stanley was the son of H. Adele (née Logan) and Joseph W. Schoonmaker. He was raised in Dover and graduated from Dover High School in 1949, where he proudly played on the State Championship football team. Stanley earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Montclair State University. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War.
Stanley dedicated 42 years of service to Dover Public Schools in the capacities of teacher, counselor, guidance director, and assistant to the superintendent. In retirement, he was active in many town organizations. He served as Vice President of the Dover Area Historical Society and was instrumental in acquiring and renovating the current museum building. Alongside fellow historian George Laurie, Stanley co-authored “Images of America: Dover.” He was chairman of the Outreach Committee where he developed and presented video presentations on the history of Dover at numerous venues. Stanley also served as vice chairman of the Dover Historic Preservation Committee.
Stanley was a cofounder and member of the Dover High School Hall of Fame. As an older adult who utilized and his knowledge and expertise in service to others, Stanley was named a “Morris County Living Treasure” by the St. Francis Residential Community and the Morris County Division Aging in 2013. He also received recognition for his service with resolutions by the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Town of Dover.
In addition to his parents, Stanley was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Marjorie (née Moran). He is survived by his daughter, Beth; his son, William and daughter-in-law, Lisa; and his grandchildren, Matthew and Kaitlyn.
Gennaro "Jerry" Tardive
Gennaro “Jerry” Tardive of Stanhope, NJ passed away peacefully on Monday, November 24, 2025 at Morristown Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He was 74 years old. Jerry was born on July 16, 1951 in Dover, NJ to the late Vincent and the late Paula (Romano) Tardive.
Jerry was a long-time resident of Stanhope, NJ and was a beloved Teacher, Athletic Director and Coach at Dover High School where he worked for more than 28 years before retiring. In his 13 years as head football coach he won three football conference championships, two football state championships and was inducted into the New Jersey Scholastic Coaches Hall of Fame. Never had a losing season.
Jerry was an avid Green Bay Packers fan and also enjoyed coaching, golfing, listening to music, going down the shore and making wine. Most importantly, he truly treasured his time with his loving family and lifelong friends.
Jerry is survived by his devoted daughter, Traci Tardive VanScoyoc and husband, Ira and his devoted son, Vincent Tardive and wife, Alexis and his cherished grandchildren; Teagan & Valentino Tardive and Ellis VanScyoc. Additional survivors include, his loving sisters; Jill Fry, Linda Best in her husband, Bob, Roseanne Lehmann and her husband Scott, Jeanette Taylor and a very large loving extended family including nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
In addition to his parents, Jerry was predeceased by his beloved wife, Valerie in 2012, his sisters, Paula “Gail” Tardive in 2023 and Veronica Marks in 2017 and his brothers-in-law, Wayne Fry and Toby Taylor.
Jerry’s Life Celebration Services will include a Visitation on Sunday, November 30th from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Leber-Lakeside Funeral Home, 150 Landing Road, Landing, NJ. There will be a Funeral Mass offered on Monday, December 1st at 10:00 am at St. Michael’s RC Church, 4 Church Street, Netcong, NJ 07857. Jerry will be laid to rest with his beloved wife at Stanhope Union Cemetery in Mt. Olive Twp., NJ.
