The process established by the NJDOE to renew your Substitute Certificate is available below.
New Jersey Earned Sick Leave
Under New Jersey's Earned Sick Leave Law, you have a right to accrue up to 40 hours of earned sick leave per year.

An overview of the New Jersey Department of Education's Substitute Application Process is available by clicking the link below.
In order to obtain a substitute certificate, the New Jersey Department of Education requires the following:
- Substitute Teacher Credential Pathway 1
- Completion of 60 semester-hour credits;
- Credits must be completed at an accredited college or university at the time of application; and
- Credential is valid for five (5) years from the date of issuance
- Substitute Teacher Credential Pathway 2
- Completion of 30 semester-hour credits;
- Credits must be completed at an accredited college or university at the time of application;
- Applicant must be enrolled in an accredited institution of higher education at the time of application;
- Applicant must be at least 20 years of age;
- Credential pathway is available until June 30, 2023; and
- Credential is valid for five (5) years from the date of issuance
- Copy of NJ Department of Education Criminal History Review
- New Applicants (never fingerprinted for a school)
- Archive (previously fingerprinted for a school)
